Vintage in Pills DIRK BIKKEMBERGS Spring 2003 - Fashion Channel Dirk Bikkembergs graduated from the fashion department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp in 1982. In 1985, he won the Golden Spindle competition with his menswear collection, and in 1986, he launched his Dirk Bikkembergs label with a shoe collection. In 1988, he partnered with the Italian manufacturers Gibo and presented his first complete menswear collection in Paris a year later. In 1991, he established his own production facilities in Italy. Bikkembergs' early clothing designs were influenced by military elements and workwear, but around the year 2000, he became fascinated by the world of sports and the athlete became his muse. He added the term "Sport Couture" to the Dirk Bikkembergs label, which was subsequently expanded to include the additional Bikkembergs line. In 2003, he became the first fashion designer to create custom-made off-the-field suits for a top-ranking soccer team, Inter Milan. This close connection between fashion and sports would define his signature style until he left the fashion world in 2011.
