For his Louis Vuitton Cruise 2026 collection, Nicolas Ghesquière chose the iconic Palais des Papes in Avignon—a Gothic architectural marvel and UNESCO World Heritage Site—as his dramatic stage. The designer opened with a tribute to Jean Vilar, the revolutionary founder of the Avignon Theatre Festival, setting the tone for a show where theatricality met high fashion in a breathtaking fusion.
In a whirlwind of references—Joan of Arc and Janis Joplin, Shakespearean heroines and glam rock icons—Ghesquière unveiled 45 looks that marry religious opulence with rock attitude. Picture lamé-effect damasks, metallic-threaded jacquards, sculptural silhouettes, equestrian boots with exaggerated cuffs, and glittering mini capes and cassocks—all illuminated under Avignon’s medieval grandeur.
The show’s emotional core? Ghesquière’s own memory of discovering avant-garde art at the Palais in 2000. This spirit of creative discovery echoes in the wooden handbags crafted by young artist Thomas Roger, in the mirrored shoes, and in the signature Louis Vuitton craftsmanship elevated to theatrical heights.
Staged with a reversed perspective—spectators placed onstage thanks to set designer Es Devlin—the show became pure performance art. With a soundtrack by William Sheller and a front row including Brigitte Macron, Cate Blanchett, and Emma Stone, Cruise 2026 was both a spectacular moment and a poetic statement on fashion as modern mythology.
