First launched 10 years ago, clean beauty brand Haeckels is determined to produce skincare in a more responsible way. “The next step of the beauty industry is taking sustainability off of the customer and just presenting a solution,” Charlie Vickery, the brand’s managing director, tells Clara Amfo in the latest episode of BMW and British Vogue’s The Extra Mile series.
After making its name by creating products using handpicked seaweed off the coast of Margate, Haeckels is now beginning to turn to other materials too. “It’s not just about seaweed anymore: we use mushrooms, we’re pioneering other materials,” Vickery continues. “The seaweed that we have is a natural resource – over-harvesting can obviously have a detrimental impact on the environment.”
The beauty brand is also considering the full lifecycle of its product, including developing packaging that is home compostable. “If it goes to landfill, it composts; if it goes in the ocean, it composts,” the managing director explains. “Every single place in which this could possibly end up is taken care of.”
