The French artist directs Lawrence in a short film that blurs the lines between performance and reality.
For W's Art Issue, Philippe Parreno cast Jennifer Lawrence in an upcoming short film where she plays a character who is—and isn’t—Jennifer Lawrence. It helped that Darius Khondji—the legendary cinematographer whose body of work includes ‘The Beach,’ ‘Seven,’ and the upcoming ‘Marty Supreme’—served as director of photography.
The idea was to capture moments when Lawrence was herself, moments when she was not acting, and moments when it was impossible to tell the difference.
In this scene, Parreno asked Lawrence to silently register a spectrum of emotions—each prompted by a word or thought. Second by second, she moved through inner turmoil, calm, anxiety, joy, and sorrow with minuscule movements, proving why she’s one of the biggest stars in the world.
