Watchuwant is now WatchBox! Subscribe for the best luxury watch content. The Ball Watch Company's Engineer Hydrocarbon Deep Quest is about as hardcore as dive watches get. Rated to a maximum depth of 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) and fortified with a monstrous 5.3mm-thick sapphire crystal, this watch really is ready for any outdoor challenge. Ball is a name often associated with railroad chronometry and train culture, but the Engineer line brings the Ball name into the 21st century. The standout feature of the multi-layer dial is a technology unknown to the Ball watchmakers of the Pullman era; tritium trasor illumination. This technology, which encapsulates tritium gas in glass beads and implants them on the features of the dial, allows the Engineer Hydrocarbon Deep Quest to glow with brilliance regardless of sun exposure. Unlike Luminova, which requires charging via sunlight, the tritium lume in the Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon is self-charged by (safe) radioactive energy. Even the unidirectional rotating dive bezel is fully-lumed - a rarity in the world of dive watches. The Engineer Hydrocarbon Deep Quest is crafted from a 43mm mono block titanium case. The vessel is built like a Seawolf-class submarine and just as imposing. A matching titanium bracelet with double-deployant clasp features highly-secure double-trigger release and a tool-free micro adjustment for easy wear over dive suits or thick winter clothing. Inside the monstrous case, a chronometer-certified ETA 2824-2
