http://www.thewatchbox.com Ceramic is a difference-maker. This Panerai Radiomir Black Seal Ceramica PAM 292 is proof. Consider the look, attitude, and effortless cool of the late 1990's "black watches." Now consider all of the above without the paralyzing fear of scratches. That's the Panerai Radiomir Black Seal Ceramica. Panerai launched its PAM 292 - its first ever ceramic-cased watch - in Geneva in 2007. The Radiomir case, as Panerai's first-borne product, was the natural launch platform. The "Black Seal" name was a dual reference to the new watch's dark visage and the nighttime camp gear of the Italian frogmen who carried Panerai watches into amphibious warfare legend; the "black seals" of the Decimia Flottiglia MAS. Ceramic is an inorganic compound that is fired in a kiln similar to ancient pottery techniques. Unlike old-time craftsmen, modern ceramic is blended and cured in cleanroom conditions and finished to a luxury standard. The result is a homogenous black matrix that can only be scratched reliably by diamond; even then, the straight-through black coloration means there is no shiny metal to gleam from beneath. A traditional 45mm "cushion" case ensures that the Panerai Radiomir Black Seal Ceramica PAM 292 wears light on the wrist. Ceramic is lighter than all watchmaking metals except aluminum and titanium. The mass is quite manageable, and any enthusiast who enjoys a 40mm steel watch on a strap will feel very comfortable while brandishing the Panerai Radiomi
