Meet the brave women who fought for our country and are now ready to compete for Australia in the Invictus Games in Sydney this month, a sporting event to harness the fighting spirit of veterans.
The Invictus Games were created by Prince Harry in 2014, who, after visiting the Warrior Games in Colorado the previous year, decided to create his own version.
“Having the opportunity to be involved with Invictus Games is a massive privilege,” shares Cpl. Sonya Newman, competing in wheelchair basketball, volleyball, indoor rowing and swimming. “I was lucky enough to be part of last year’s team. Honestly, it changed my life. So to be able to find a positive that you didn’t even know existed, the power that that has for people is tremendous.”
“Having Prince Harry founding the Invictus Games, I think he’s a great ambassador, not only for mental health in general but for veterans that feel like they’ve got nothing,” shares Emilea Mysko, competing in cycling and indoor rowing. “When they leave the service, they’re broken mentally and physically and just having that strong role model who himself has served enables us to know that we are not alone and that he’s there for us and so is a lot of other people.”
