Towards the end of 2020, Megan Thee Stallion published an op-ed in The New York Times, titled “Why I Speak Up for Black Women.” A concise overview of the phenomenon of misogynoir, the piece related her own experience with violent assault to the larger history of Black women in America. Representative Maxine Waters, currently the longest-serving Black female member of Congress, has seen how much has changed for Black women and how much has, dispiritingly, stayed the same. Representative Waters reached out to Megan after her op-ed to say “We need your voice in this fight.”
Here, the two women, joined by BAZAAR Features Director Kaitlyn Greenidge, spoke at the start of 2021 about what it takes to stay grounded, the genius of 'WAP', and how to define themselves in a world that would love to do it for them.
