Hip-hop and watches are inseparable. Jay-Z gives Daytonas as party favors. Nas has a Patek Nautilus 5712R so beautiful that it's been immortalized in a book. Lil Wayne wears G-Shock. Just last week, the late Pop Smoke dropped a posthumous song called "AP" about his icy Audemars Piguet. And the connection between hip-hop and horology was forged in the 1980s, when rappers began to see enough commercial success to merit splashing out.
Photographer Janette Beckman was there when it happened. After coming up in the London punk scene, she landed in New York City just as hip-hop was taking off, and her images stand as definitive documents of hip-hop's early flirtation with horology, from calculator watches to the dawn of bling. "Everybody wanted to look fly," she says. "People were wearing Adidas and Gazelles and Kangols and tracksuits. There were all different types of styles, to be honest. And people usually had watches on. In fact, everybody had a watch on."
In this bonus feature Beckman discusses LL Cool J, 2 Live Crew, EPMD, Salt-N-Pepa, Run-DMC, and Flava Flav.
