Running a marathon is a huge challenge, but running with only partial sight takes an entirely different kind of strength. Eva has cone dystrophy, a rare genetic eye disorder that progressively worsens her vision. She started running in high school for her college applications, thinking she was “never good enough to be a runner.” Years later, this marathon runner is taking on the Berlin Marathon, not to compete with anyone else, but with herself. “I wanted to do something selfish.” For Eva, running a marathon without sight means putting her trust in someone else, step after step. The finish line is about more than 42.2 kilometers, it’s about finding her motivation and ambition on her own terms. Eva is a New York native who has called Berlin home for the past four years. After stepping away from competitive triathlon, she found her way back to running and began a new runner's journey. Today, she trains with guide runners who help her navigate everything from intervals to long runs. Berlin was the perfect challenge: a major city marathon, a fast and flat course, and a running community she could train with. Watch Eva’s full marathon story on YouTube on October 7.
