Andrew McGonigle – Taking a Volcano’s Pulse

In 2008, volcanologist Andrew McGonigle received a Rolex Award for Enterprise to devise a reliable way of predicting volcanic eruptions. At first, he built and flew drones capable of sampling the plumes of active volcanoes. He has since developed ultra-sensitive smartphone camera-based technology that makes it possible to take a volcano’s pulse from its rim. With 800 million people living near Earth’s 500 historically active volcanoes, this work is significant both for humanitarian and scientific purposes.
