Sotirios Bulgaris was born in Greece, but he made his name - literally - in Rome. As Sotiro Bulgari, the jeweler of Hellenic origin remade himself in the images of his adopted home, and he marshaled vintage Latin to market his wares in 1884. In 2009, the house of BVLGARI celebrated its 125th anniversary with a tribute the the founding father: the Bvlgari 125th Anniversary Sotirio Bulgari.
Although of Greek origin, Sotirio and his eponymous luxury label embraced Roman imagery in a big way. Bvlgari's 125th Anniversary likewise appropriates the Roman arch as a recurring design motif. Two opposing arcs of precision-cut metal partition the dial and act as the anchor of the Sotirio Bulgari's visage.
Bulgari elaborates the dial with a striking array of finishing techniques more commonly observed on luxury watch movements. Drawn metal edges have been shorn of their burrs and roughness; linear "cotes de Geneve" run from the top to the bottom of the dial; polished golden screw heads transform assembly fixtures into jewelry; fine linear dressage metal grain atop the "arches" creates a textural contrast with the broad ridges of the "cotes."
A case crafted from 18-karat yellow gold adds substance to the high-style dial of the Bvlgari 125th Anniversary Sotirio Bulgari. Elaborate diagonal lugs are fixed to the case with nearly seamless junction points, and their minimal mass counterbalances the robust proportions of the 42mm golden vessel. A half-hunter case
