During that celebration, the now-iconic Datejust wristwatch was released, complete with the first instance of Rolex’s 5-link Jubilee bracelet. At the time of its debut, the Datejust was the first mechanical wristwatch to feature a date mechanism that automatically changed over at midnight. It also utilizes two already-established Rolex innovations, the waterproof Oyster case and the Perpetual movement with self-winding. The watch has since become one of the brand’s most successful models and continues production today. While the Datejust has seen numerous upgrades over the past seven decades, including the movement and metals used, its core design remains the same. Until just recently, the case always measured 36mm in diameter. In 2009, Rolex finally added a larger case option to the Datejust portfolio, a 41mm edition via the Datejust II.
