Fashion, Fascism, Film examines the blurred boundaries that connect fashion, photography and film, set against historical social behaviours in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Join photography critic Philippe Garner and Nick Knight in a discussion on the relationships between fascism, fashion and film that influenced the work of legendary photographers including Helmut Newton, Guy Bourin and Chris von Wangenheim.
Several 1970s films confronted fascism in the aftermath of the Second World War. From Bernardo Bertolucci’s pivotal The Conformist (1970) and Bob Fosse's Cabaret (1972), to Liliana Cavani's The Night Porter (1974) and Pier Paolo Pasolini's 100 Days of Sodom (1975), the 70s cultural aesthetic was informed by connections to fascist, Nazi imagery. Emphasis on the undressed body and disconcerting narratives from 70s films revitalised image-making to shock creative culture.
