By this point, you already know the drill - Episode 5 of our Watch in the Box video series is out now! For Episode 5 of our Watch in the Box video series, we take a look at a modern (and recently discontinued) example of Rolex’s legendary multi-time zone pilot’s watch - the GMT-Master II ref. 116710. In 2005, Rolex debuted a brand new design for their GMT-Master II, introducing the wider and more angular “Super Case” and the Cerachrom (ceramic) bezel to their collection of traveler’s watches. However, upon its initial introduction, this new design was only available for the precious metal version of the GMT-Master II. At Baselworld 2007, Rolex finally released an updated version of their stainless steel GMT-Master II that followed the same design that was introduced two years before. Like the 18k gold version of the watch that first ushered in the new generation of Rolex pilot’s watches, the stainless steel reference 116710 GMT-Master II replaced the Twinlock crown of its predecessor with a Triplock crown, and featured an all-black Cerachrom bezel insert, rather than the bi-colored versions found on the GMT-Master II watches that Rolex sells today. Additionally, to accompany its thicker “Super Case” the GMT-Master II 116710 also received a “Maxi” dial with thicker hands and larger hour markers, and a completely redesigned bracelet that featured solid center links and a state-of-the-art Oysterlock clasp. Like the precious metal anniversary edition of the watch that debuted
